Miguel Zugaza: from Madrid to Bilbao

Miguel Zugaza announces his decision to step down from the Prado and reassume the directorship of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum next year

This morning, Miguel Zugaza informed the Permanent Committee of the Royal Board of Trustees of his decision to conclude his term next year as director of the Museo del Prado after fifteen years in the position. He also announced his intention to reassume the post of director of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum on the retirement of its present director.

In a text addressed to Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport, and to Unai Rementeria, Chairman of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Miguel Zugaza stated that he “considers the goals established during his term of office to have been fulfilled and expresses his thanks for all the support received.” The Museum’s Director for the past fifteen years considers that “the Museum is now embarking on a new and exciting phase with the focus on its bicentenary and on the completion of the Museo del Prado Campus with the addition of the Hall of Realms.” At the same time, he considers himself “extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to return to the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (of which he was director between 1995 and 2001) and offer it all the experience he has acquired.”

The Minister of Education, Culture and Sport has personally thanked Miguel Zugaza for the services he has rendered the Museum over so many years and has asked him to continue to be involved in its bicentenary project through the Committee for the 2nd centenary of the Museo Nacional del Prado in 2019.

For his part and in the name of the Bilbao museum’s founding institutions (the City Council of Bilbao, the Provincial Government of Bizkaia and the Basque Government), the Chairman of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and current president of the Bilbao museum’s Board of Trustees expressed his satisfaction at being able to count on Miguel Zugaza for leading the museum forward after the outstanding contribution made over the past years by Javier Viar Olloqui.

Both institutions have agreed to stay in contact in order to facilitate the transition of directorship of the respective museums. With this aim in mind, the Minister will propose to the Prado’s Royal Board of Trustees the creation of a specific committee at the Museum. As established in its statutes, it will initiate the selection procedure prior to the proposal of a new appointment to the Council of Ministers. Mr Zugaza will remain in his position with all the powers authorised by it until a new director is appointed.

José Pedro Pérez-Llorca, president of the Museum’s Royal Board of Trustees, wished to emphasise that “the Museo del Prado will never be able to sufficiently express its thanks to Miguel Zugaza for his intelligence, wisdom and imagination and the authority with which he has led the Museum”, and that “the results of his efforts, namely the great success of the Prado, speak for themselves.”

Madrid: Master Mateo at the Prado

The exhibition brings together an exceptional group of fourteen works that were removed in the past from their original location (the west façade and choir of the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela) and are now housed in the cathedral museum and in different institutions and private collections.

Notable among them are the recently restored sculptures of David and Solomon, and a Statue-column of a male figure holding a cartouche that was found last October inside the cathedral’s south tower, a discovery that represents an enormous advance in our knowledge of Master Mateo’s activities in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Co-organised with the Real Academia Gallega de Bellas Artes, and the Fundación Catedral de Santiago.

The Museo del Prado extends “Bosch: The 5th Centenary Exhibition”

The Museo del Prado and Fundación BBVA wish to offer visitors every opportunity to visit “Bosch: The 5th Centenary Exhibition,” a unique event at which they can enter the imagination of one of the most fascinating and universal painters of all time. In this respect, more than 428,527 visitors have already enjoyed the exhibition. The show will therefore remain open until 25 September, featuring special opening hours: over the last two weekends, visitors can enjoy the exhibition up until midnight.

In order to facilitate the purchase of tickets and avoid queues as time passes are required, we recommend that visitors purchase their tickets in advance by selecting the date and time of entry. These passes are available at both the ticket office and via the Internet: www.museodelprado.es

Bosch. The 5th Centenary Exhibition

Comprises all eight paintings by the artist to be found in Spain together with others loaned from collections and museums around the world. This represents the greatest number of Bosch’s works ever to be assembled.

Damián Ortega in Madrid

This Ortega installation revisits the artist’s previous series (2007), which was inspired by Mexico City’s Torre Latinoamérica, built between 1949 and 1956 and regarded as one of the most important examples of modern architecture in Mexico. In his new installation Ortega has inverted the tower and hung it from the dome of the Palacio as an hour-glass cum pendulum which releases grains of sand in unpredictable designs. Organised by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía .

FLANDES BY SUBSTITUTION: COPIES OF FLEMISH MASTERS IN THE HISPANIC WORLD (1500-1700)

Art History Seminar 18 of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) Brussels, 9-10 February 2017

On 9 and 10 February 2017 an international conference will be held on the copies of paintings of Flemish masters during the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries related to the Hispanic world. The event will take place at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels and is organized in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Project COPIMONARCH: La copia pictórica en la Monarquía Hispánica, siglos XVI-XVIII (I+D HAR2014-52061-P) from the Universidad de Granada.

The artistic heritage of the regions that once formed part of the former Spanish Empire includes a large number of painted copies after Flemish masters made during the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries. Most of these works have received little attention even though they constitute a valuable source for understanding the artistic influence of the Southern Netherlands on Spanish and Latin American art and society in this period. Indeed, the study of copies of Flemish masters sheds light on a number of art historical issues, including the means of diffusion of artistic models, stylistic trends and the dynamics of the art market and the world of collecting. These copies are a valuable testimony to the political, commercial and cultural ties that existed between the Hispanic territories and the Southern Netherlands.

The conference will focus on the phenomenon of the copy from a large variety of approaches, ranging from workshop practices to collecting, trade and patronage. Papers about studies on particular copies are welcomed, but special attention will be paid to the driving forces behind the export-driven market of copies, such as artists, patrons, collectors and merchants. By taking into account cultural, religious, political and socio-economic dynamics, this conference aims to shed new light on the multifaceted artistic impact of the Southern Netherlands on the Hispanic world during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

We welcome 20 minutes papers that offer new contributions in which recent methodologies and theoretical frameworks are applied to copies after Flemish masters from this period. Proposals can focus both on copies made in the Southern Netherlands to be sent to the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, and on copies made in these regions.

Candidates are invited to submit their proposals to Eduardo Lamas-Delgado (eduardo.lamas@kikirpa.be) and to the project COPIMONARCH (copimonarch@gmail.com) before 15 September 2016. This should include an abstract (up to 300 words) and a brief CV (max. 1 page).

Survey of the life and works of this Enlightenment art historian and collector, uniting158 items mainly drawn from the collections of the BNE, but also including paintings, drawings and manuscripts from other collections. Among the artworks shown are Goya’s portraits of Ceán Bermúdez of c.1786 and 1798-99, Goya’s unpublished illustrations for the art historian’s Diccionario of Spanish artists, and Rembrandt’s Abraham, Hagar and Ishmael of 1637, from his collection.
