Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Medal


On 6 July Mr Jorge Cabrera, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of Spain in London, and Prof. Claudia Hopkins, Chair of ARTES, awarded the Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Medal to Natalia Muñoz-Rojas for her essay ‘Morisco Patronage and the Granada Venegas Chapel in the Former Cathedral-mosque of Granada’.  Natalia is a PhD candidate at The Courtauld Institute, working under the supervision of Dr. Tom Nickson. 

The Highly Commended Prize was split between: 

Andrea Bouza (MA student, The Courtauld Institute), for her essay ‘”Videte Regem Salomonem”: Reconsidering the Attribution, Iconography and Devotional Function of the Ávila Ecce Homo’ 

and 

Esther Hughes (MA student, The Courtauld Institute), for her essay ‘Unfolding New Worlds: Rethinking Artistic Influence in Novohispanic Biombos’. 

The award ceremony took place in the National Gallery, London. 

The Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Prize is an annual award for the best art historical essay on an Iberian theme written by a UK-based student. It is named in honour of Juan Facundo Riaño (1829-1901), a distinguished nineteenth-century Spanish art historian and noted Anglophile, who played a key role in disseminating knowledge of Iberian art in Britain. He was instrumental in advising the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum) on the development of its significant collection of Iberian art.
