When in 1503 Vasco de Gama returns to Portugal from his second journey to India, King Dom Manuel I commissions from playwright and metalworker, Gil Vicente, a rich turriform Monstrance - or Custodia - from the spoils and riches brought back. The pious intent and imperial ambition expressed in its very materiality - made from gold payed to Dom Manuel as tribute by the King of Kilwa (in modern Tanzania) - is made unequivocal by the inscription running around its polylobed base:
