Online Resources from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and MoMA

Since 2016, MoMA and the Guggenheim Museum have worked on digitising exhibition catalogues and other material related to their displays and collections.

MoMA’s ‘Exhibition History‘ page offers access to photographs, interpretation, checklists and other material for 4,918 exhibitions from the museum’s founding in 1929 to the present. ARTES members may be particularly interested to discover a 1931 exhibition dedicated to Diego Rivera, the show American Sources of Modern Art (Aztec, Mayan, Incan) of 1933, the ground-breaking Cubism and Abstract Art of 1936, the 1939 show Picasso: Forty years of his art and exhibitions dedicated to the Brazilian artist Candido Portinari and to Joan Miró in 1940. The archive offers a way to explore the museum’s history during its closure for refurbishment and redisplay (re-opens October 21).

On archive.org, art lovers and researchers can read and download more than 200 catalogues published by the Guggenheim Museum. Highlights include the exhibition Tauromaquia (Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, Venice, 1985), Berriaren tradizioa: Guggenheim bildumako maisulanak, 1945–1990 (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, 1995), and The Aztec Empire (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2004).

Featured Exhibition: After ’68. Art and artistic practices in the Basque Country 1968–2018, Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao, until 28 April 2019

exposicion-2-800-268Survey exhibition of some 150 works, including painting, sculpture, photography, video art and works on paper, by nearly 100 artists, covering the five decades from 1968, when a new generation of Basque artists born in the 1940s was joining the art scene, to 2018 when art made by women has become increasingly prominent. It also assesses the importance that the individual and collective careers that emerged in the region have had on both Spanish and international art. The show’s point of departure will be the collection of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, which will be joined by important loans from private collections and fellow public institutions—such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, ARTIUM and the Kunstmuseum of Basel—that have placed particular emphasis on acquiring contemporary Basque art. After ’68. Art and Practices in the Basque Country 1968–2018 is completed in gallery 33 by an exhibition space curated by the musician, producer, journalist and sound artist Xabier Erkizia. This gallery presents original materials—record covers, posters, sound recordings, etc.—which provide a historical view of the musical and sound practices in the Basque Country over these past five decades. Featured Exhibition: ABC: The Alphabet of the Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao, until 2 June

exposicion_slider_274_990This exhibition marking the 110th anniversary of Bilbao’s Museo de Bellas Artes aims to provide a path through the museum’s collections via a display of 110 works selected by the writer Kirmen Uribe (born 1970), using alphabetically ordered words composed in four languages, Basque, Spanish, English and French, to contextualise the works. In this way Uribe wishes to fuse art and literature. The show brings together paintings by Cranach the Elder, Martin de Vos, Orazio Gentileschi, Gauguin, Mary Cassatt, and Francis Bacon, with masterpieces by Ribera, Murillo, Francisco de Zurbarán, Goya, Sorolla, Ignacio Zuloaga, Eduardo Chillida, Jorge Oteiza, and Antoni Tàpies. Works on paper by artists such as Hockney are shown with sports posers by Arteta. The show inaugurates the newly remodelled rooms 1-31 in the old building.

Miguel Zugaza: from Madrid to Bilbao

Miguel Zugaza announces his decision to step down from the Prado and reassume the directorship of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum next year

This morning, Miguel Zugaza informed the Permanent Committee of the Royal Board of Trustees of his decision to conclude his term next year as director of the Museo del Prado after fifteen years in the position. He also announced his intention to reassume the post of director of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum on the retirement of its present director.

In a text addressed to Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport, and to Unai Rementeria, Chairman of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Miguel Zugaza stated that he “considers the goals established during his term of office to have been fulfilled and expresses his thanks for all the support received.” The Museum’s Director for the past fifteen years considers that “the Museum is now embarking on a new and exciting phase with the focus on its bicentenary and on the completion of the Museo del Prado Campus with the addition of the Hall of Realms.” At the same time, he considers himself “extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to return to the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (of which he was director between 1995 and 2001) and offer it all the experience he has acquired.”

The Minister of Education, Culture and Sport has personally thanked Miguel Zugaza for the services he has rendered the Museum over so many years and has asked him to continue to be involved in its bicentenary project through the Committee for the 2nd centenary of the Museo Nacional del Prado in 2019.

For his part and in the name of the Bilbao museum’s founding institutions (the City Council of Bilbao, the Provincial Government of Bizkaia and the Basque Government), the Chairman of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and current president of the Bilbao museum’s Board of Trustees expressed his satisfaction at being able to count on Miguel Zugaza for leading the museum forward after the outstanding contribution made over the past years by Javier Viar Olloqui.

Both institutions have agreed to stay in contact in order to facilitate the transition of directorship of the respective museums. With this aim in mind, the Minister will propose to the Prado’s Royal Board of Trustees the creation of a specific committee at the Museum. As established in its statutes, it will initiate the selection procedure prior to the proposal of a new appointment to the Council of Ministers. Mr Zugaza will remain in his position with all the powers authorised by it until a new director is appointed.

José Pedro Pérez-Llorca, president of the Museum’s Royal Board of Trustees, wished to emphasise that “the Museo del Prado will never be able to sufficiently express its thanks to Miguel Zugaza for his intelligence, wisdom and imagination and the authority with which he has led the Museum”, and that “the results of his efforts, namely the great success of the Prado, speak for themselves.”

Nineteen works owned by the Prado, including the Christ on the Cross and the Resurrection gifted by Plácido Arango, plus 35 from national and international museums, private collectors and religious institutions. Works include the Virgin with the Little Bird from the parish church of San Agustín in Madrid, the Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John from the New Cathedral in Salamanca and the Ecce Homo from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, which was recently restored in the Prado workshops.

The most extensive retrospective to date of nearly 150 paintings, drawings, prints, posters and sculptures, covering Equipo Crónica’s entire creative career from 1964 when three Valencian artists, Rafael Solbes (1940-1981), Manuel Valdés (1942) and Juan Antonio Toledo (1940-1995) established the group, to 1981 when Solbes died.
Featuring major works from many collections both public and private, the exhibition gives pride of place to a large group on loan for the occasion from the IVAM, in Valencia. Against a background of Pop and new figuration, Equipo Crónica made a name for itself with a number of exhibitions in Paris in the 1960s. Their activity was deliberately linked to the social and political situation in Spain at the time and involved working as anonymous members of a team producing images, many of which were drawn from the media, or critically appropriated references from history and art. The group conjured up in visual terms a particular era in Spanish history, one that roughly coincides with the final ten years of the Franco régime and the beginning of Spain’s transition to democracy.
Art historians Tomàs Llorens Serra (who wrote the original short essays that provided theoretical backing for the group) and Boye Llorens Peters have curated the exhibition.
