The exhibition ‘Retratos’ is on at the MAPFRE Foundation until 3 September 2017. Focusing on portraits in the twentieth century, the exhibition features photographs by Spanish and Latin American photographers such as Alberto García-Alix, Cristina García Rodero, Graciela Iturbide, Anna Malagrida, Fernando Maquieira. It is divided in four themes, ‘Cities,’ ‘Communities’ and ‘Artists and Models’ which attempt to embrace and reveal the complexity of contemporary portraiture.

Sorolla, Dallas, San Diego and Madrid

2014-05-SorollaAndAmericaSorolla and America, Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, 13 December 2013 – 19 April 2014; touring to San Diego Museum of Art, 30 May – 26 August and finally Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid, 23 September 2014 – 11 January 2015. Exhibition curated by the artist’s great-grandaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla , presenting over 100 paintings, oil sketches and drawings, by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) covering his early socially realistic themes as well as his better known landscapes and beach scenes. Exhibition focuses on key American collectors Archer Huntington and Thomas Fortune Ryan and the impact on the artist and American cultural society of the exhibitions he held in the States in 1909 and 1911. Accompanied by bilingual English/Spanish editions of the catalogue.
The exhibition and its catalogue (by the artist’s great granddaughter and Mark Roglan, Director of the Dallas Museum) have received an enthusiastic and thoughtful review by Richard Brettell in April’s edition of The Burlington Magazine (pp 267-269), which makes interesting comparisons with other recent Sorolla exhibitions over the last decade.

Picasso, Madrid

2014-05-PicassoEnElTaller_tcm184-50902Picasso in the Studio, Fundacion Mapfre, Madrid, 12 February – 11 May 2014. Exhibition of about 80 paintings, 70 prints and drawings, 26 photos and other ephemera including 10 palettes displayed in five sections to provide an insight into Picasso’s use of his studio as the centre for his activity from 1905 when he produced his Self-portrait with a palette and his Man Sitting on a Stool of 1969, which has only been shown once before. Many of the works have been selected from private collections rarely seen before as well as loans from major collections worldwide. Accompanied by catalogue in Spanish, first published in Madrid in 2004 – with essays by Christopher Green amongst others.
