We are seeking an outstanding academic leader and scholar in Spanish and Latin American Art and/or Visual Culture to direct the interdisciplinary Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art, a collaborative venture with The Auckland Project.

The Director will be an internationally recognised authority in her/his field who will act as an intellectual entrepreneur, developing academic contacts within Durham University, as well as nationally and internationally, and work in close collaboration with The Auckland Project’s forthcoming Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland – the central impetus for the creation of the Zurbarán Centre – on research, programming, and the development of joint initiatives. The Director will be located in an appropriate academic department of Durham University (Faculty of Arts and Humanities).

Auckland Castle, at the heart of The Auckland Project, is one of the most important working episcopal palaces in Europe, the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham since the twelfth century. For more than 250 years, Auckland Castle has been home to the internationally significant cycle of masterpieces from the Spanish Golden Age, Jacob and his Twelve Sons by Francisco de Zurbarán, the inspiration for The Zurbarán Centre. Financier Jonathan Ruffer set up Auckland Castle Trust in 2012 (now The Auckland Project) to secure the future of the Zurbaráns in Bishop Auckland.

Durham University formally established the Zurbarán Centre in October 2016. The Centre’s collaboration with the Spanish Gallery will provide an unusual opportunity to combine engagement with connoisseurship of a new permanent collection with scholarship of, particularly, Golden Age art, playing to Durham University’s established strengths in Spanish and Latin American studies. The Centre is an embedded part of Durham University located in Bishop Auckland, where the Director will be primarily based.

This represents an exciting opportunity to further the ambitions of both partner organisations to become the leading home for the study and appreciation of Spanish and Latin American art. Over the past three years, the Centre has fostered research in Spanish and Latin American art in a global context, with a special focus on the art of Medieval Spain, the Spanish Golden Age, Mexican national art, the 19th-century history of collecting, and Spanish and Latin American cinema and photography.

Pre-doctoral fellowships are supported by the Center for Spain in America (CSA). The Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH) and the Center for Spain in America (CSA) encourage studies on Spanish history, art and literature by establishing doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships at European and American universities, as well as at research centers whose holdings are particularly relevant to the knowledge of Spanish culture. They likewise establish assistantships for curatorial work at museums with significant holdings of Spanish painting.

This is an exciting opportunity to assist with the management of a major art collection and contribute to the development of academic and research support services at the University of Essex. Duties of the Role

Qualifications and Skills required
Educated to first degree level in art history or a relevant subject, ideally with a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in art history, gallery studies or a related subject, and knowledge of the art of Latin America, the post holder will possess excellent communication, presentation, IT and organisational and planning skills.

Experience of handling artworks, using social media for promotional purposes and working within a gallery or museum environment is essential for this post.

NYPL’s collections on Latin America, Iberia, and the Hispanic experience in the United States constitute an international resource of considerable importance, measured by the depth and variety of the research materials held, and the large numbers of unique and scarce materials in the collections. The Latin American collections span the history of the region from the earliest rarities to present-day publications and are rich in primary source documents, literary texts, ephemera, and many other resources that serve both the scholar and student. Collections on Spain and Portugal are equally extensive, with particular strengths in literature and history, including manuscripts and rare books from the Golden Age through the Age of Discovery and the Spanish and Portuguese colonial period in the Americas. Building on these historic strengths, the Library has continued to document the history and literature of Latinos in the United States, particularly in New York City. The broad scope of NYPL’s collecting over the years has resulted in a collection that provides extraordinary opportunities for interdisciplinary research across the full range of humanities and social science topics, and, consequently, within each of its four research centers.

The Curator for Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Studies provides essential leadership in the development, management, and promotion of the Library’s research collections in these areas. Based within the Collections and Research Services department, which is responsible for establishing a unified strategic vision for NYPL’s Research Collections, the Curator works collaboratively with staff across the Research Libraries to coordinate the development of the collection and the delivery of research services that help position the Library as a vital resource to support learning, creativity, scholarship, and enterprise.

 

The Curator will provide strong and effective subject expertise and leadership in developing and promoting the Library’s collections documenting Latin American, Iberian, and Latino culture, serving as the primary spokesperson for the collection, and undertaking activities that advance expanded use and other strategic goals.

 In support of teaching, learning, and scholarship, the Curator will contextualize the collections in a variety of ways, including through exhibitions and publications, and will facilitate digital humanities and other scholarly projects, and collaborate on the development of public programming and educational resources.  The Curator is responsible for raising awareness of the collections and cultivating new communities of users, including a supportive donor base. The Curator will actively engage in fundraising activities to support the needs of the collection, fellowships for researchers, and new initiatives.

 Drawing on an understanding of the collection’s historical strengths, its use, and scholarly trends, the Curator will plan for, communicate, and implement strategies to build and shape the collections, and will investigate and make specific recommendations for special collections acquisitions across the Library, including the cultivation and pursuit of major new archival acquisitions.

Post-doc: 3 positions at the University of Louvain, ‘The origin and early development of philosophy in tenth-century al-Andalus: the impact of ill-defined materials and channels of transmission’

PhilAnd is a five-year Advanced ERC project to start in October 2017 at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) under the supervision of Prof. Godefroid de Callataÿ. The objective of PhilAnd is to conduct a large-scale exploration of how, and under which form, philosophy appeared for the first time in al-Andalus. At the crossroads of several major lines of enquiries in modern scholarship and in line with recent discoveries having important chronological implications, PhilAnd focuses on the 10th century, a period usually disregarded by historians on the assumption that philosophy as such was not cultivated in the Iberian Peninsula before the 11th-12th centuries. Its originality is also to put emphasis on ‘ill-defined’ materials and channels of transmission, a field which remains largely unexplored. PhilAnd will be conducted in partnership with the Warburg Institute (University of London).
As part of this project, three post-doc positions of three years each (to start from 2 January 2018) are offered at the UCL in relation with the three following sub-projects (SP):
1) the Ikhwān al-afā’: This SP will aim at producing a comprehensive survey of all the elements which are likely to inform us about the chronology of redaction and – where applicable – of introduction into al-Andalus of the three works that have commonly been ascribed in sources to this most influential group of thinkers known as Ikhwān al-Ṣafā’ (‘The Brethren of Purity’), namely: a) the Rasā’il (‘the Epistles’); b) the Risāla Jāmi‘a (‘The Comprehensive Epistle’) and, c) the Risāla Jāmi‘at al-Jāmi‘a (‘The Super-Comprehensive Epistle’). This chronology is currently far from clear.
2) Ibn Washiyya and the Nabatean Corpus: This SP aims to evaluate the impact of the Filāḥa Nabaṭiyya (‘The Nabatean Agriculture’), a complex and enigmatic Arabic treatise on agriculture written in the Orient, on the development of both Islamic and Jewish Neoplatonism in al-Andalus from the 10th to the 12th century. The focus will be on the reception of the ‘philosophical’ and bāṭinī (rather than agronomical) aspects of the work, with the aim of understanding why this notoriously esoteric work remained so influential even to Jewish thinkers like Judah Halevi and Maimonides.
3) Ibn Masarra: This SP will lead to the first monograph entirely devoted to Ibn Masarra’s Kitāb khawāṣṣ al-ḥurūf (‘The Book of the Properties of Letters’), consisting of an extensively annotated translation of this mystical treatise, together with an in-depth exploration of its place in the history of ‘ilm al-ḥurūf, the Islamic science of letters – including its links with the Jewish Kabbala – up to the time of Ibn ‘Arabī. This will fill an important gap and provide a valuable resource for the study of Islamic mysticism in al-Andalus.

The qualifications required for any of these sub-projects are:

  1. a PhD in Islamic Studies, in Middle Eastern Studies, or related fields;
  2. an excellent command of Classical Arabic (the knowledge of additional languages such as ancient Greek, Latin and in particular Hebrew is considered an advantage);
  3. a first-rate track record and research experience;
  4. publications of articles in peer-reviewed international journals or monographs with recognized academic publishers;
  5. academic writing and presentation skills in English (the working language of the project);
  6. the ability to work both individually and as part of a team.

These three post-doc positions are full-time equivalent. They are offered for a period of 12 months, renewable twice (three years in total) upon good performance. The post-docs retained will be required to reside in Belgium for the whole period of their fellowship. They will be asked to contribute to the intellectual life of the ERC project and of the UCL.

The application deadline is 10 November 2017
Interviews will be arranged between 4 and 6 December 2017.

Candidates selected for the interviews will be contacted by mid-November 2017, and asked to write a short research design on a topic to be announced at that moment.

Employment should become effective from 2 January 2018.
