Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellowships at the Meadows Museum, Dallas, Texas

Center for Spain in America (CSA) Curatorial Fellowship

Pre-doctoral fellowships are supported by the Center for Spain in America (CSA). The Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH) and the Center for Spain in America (CSA) encourage studies on Spanish history, art and literature by establishing doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships at European and American universities, as well as at research centers whose holdings are particularly relevant to the knowledge of Spanish culture. They likewise establish assistantships for curatorial work at museums with significant holdings of Spanish painting.

Requirements:

  • Pre-doctoral students who have completed their course work
  • At least one year of curatorial experience in an art museum; demonstrated knowledge in the field of Spanish art; proficient in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Is appointed by and reports to the director and curatorial staff of the Meadows Museum.
  • Serves a full-time appointment of one year, beginning in September 2020.
  • Performs curatorial research and is responsible for projects as assigned.
  • Travel stipend for research as well as trips to Spain and other destinations as directed by the museum director to perform research and project-based assignments.

Applicants must submit:

  • A full résumé
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A statement (not to exceed 1500 words) specifying:
    • 1) the applicant’s research goals;
    • 2) how these goals relate to or will benefit the Meadows Museum; and
    • 3) how resources at the Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University and travel related research might be used to accomplish those goals.
  • Applications and letters of recommendation must be received by November 22, 2019. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Post-doctoral fellowships are supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which seeks to strengthen, promote, and defend the centrality of the humanities and the arts to human flourishing and to the well-being of diverse, fair, and democratic societies. To this end, its core programs support exemplary and inspiring institutions of higher education and culture.

Requirements:

  • Post-doctoral students who have earned their Ph.D. within the last five years
  • At least one year of curatorial experience in an art museum; demonstrated knowledge in the field of Spanish art; proficient in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Is appointed by and reports to the director and curatorial staff of the Meadows Museum.
  • Serves a full-time appointment of two years, beginning in September 2020.
  • Performs curatorial research and is responsible for projects as assigned.
  • Travel stipend for research as well as trips to Spain and other destinations as directed by the museum director to perform research and project-based assignments.
  • Author a scholarly article for publication and present at least two public lectures, as well as actively participate in the research and organization of special exhibitions or projects.
  • Culminate fellowship by organizing a scholarly, international, two-day colloquium focusing on new research in Spanish art history.

Madrid’s Palacio de Liria to Become a Museum

As reported by El País and other Spanish newspapers, the Liria Palace, residence of the Dukes of Alba and home to Spain’s most important private collection, is being transformed into a museum and will soon open to the public every day of the week.

Touring from Madrid to Dallas, the recent exhibition Treasures from the House of Alba: 500 Years of Art and Collecting (Meadows Museum, 2015–16) has familiarised the public with masterpieces from this unparalleled collection. Yet the opening of a museum in the Liria Palace will allow visitors to experience the artworks in the spaces for which they were commissioned and collected.

Unlike such nearby collections as the Cerralbo o Lázaro Galdiano, the palace will continue to function as a residence. Works will be displayed according to the wishes of the last duchess of Alba, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva (1926–2014), who oversaw the partial opening of the palace to the public in 1975.

The museum’s opening date has not yet been announced.

This conference explores collecting practices, attitudes to and perceptions of Spanish decorative arts in Britain and Spain from the 19thcentury onwards, and how these attitudes influenced the development of museums and museum collections in both countries. The case studies aredrawnfrom the British and Spanish museum collections.

The conference is organisedin joint sessions dealing with the same subject from British and then Spanish perspectives. The first day considers the collecting of particular media while the second day focuses on the dissemination, display and conservation of these collections. The conference includes poster sessions during the coffee breaks.

On 22 March 2018 at 6 pm ARTES Committee Member Edward Payne will lecture on ‘In the Shadow of Louis-Philippe: Building a Spanish Gallery in County Durham,’ at the Visual Cultures Forum of Queen Mary University of London. The lecture will offer a glimpse behind the scenes of an exciting project in the North East of England. It will provide an introduction to the origins of an unusual endeavour—building a Spanish art gallery a stone’s throw away from a bishop’s palace—as well as a sneak preview of the gallery’s contents, including recent acquisitions and plans for potential loans and narratives.

This exhibition features a selection of outstanding Spanish Old Master paintings by such artists as Juan de Juanes, Juan Bautista Maíno, Juan van der Hamen, Francisco Bayeu and others. Acquired by The Auckland Project through Sotheby’s, these works will feature in the collection of the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland, North East England, due to open in 2019. The Gallery forms part of an inspiring initiative to create a world-class visitor destination and revitalise this former industrial town through employment, training and educational opportunities.

Casa Vicens, a home designed by Gaudí, now open to the public in Barcelona

The first home designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí has recently opened to the public. Built between 1883 and 1885 as a summer house for the Vicens family, it is a masterpiece of riotous colour in an eclectic neo-moorish style. After over a century of transformations at the hands of various different owners, the World Heritage Site has been returned to its original disposition, while an addition constructed in 1925 has been transformed into a museum. Located in the Gràcia district and surrounded by a verdant garden, the house is open everyday, from 10 am to 8 pm.
