Call For Papers: Fashion, Costume, and Consumer Culture in Iberia and Latin America: A Session in Honor of Gridley McKim-Smith, CAA conference, 21-24 February 2018, Los Angeles

For the next annual conference of the College Art Association (CAA), scheduled for 21-24 February 2018 in Los Angeles, the American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies is organizing a panel in memory of the Hispanist Gridley McKim-Smith (1943-2013).  The chairs, Mey-Yen Moriuchi and Mark Castro, invite paper proposals by August 14.

Fashion, Costume, and Consumer Culture in Iberia and Latin America: A Session in Honor of Gridley McKim-Smith
“Material splendor—rare and exquisite fabrics, dazzling displays of wealth and sartorial beauty—is a compelling value in Hispanic-American clothing” (McKim-Smith, Lexikon of the Hispanic Baroque 2013, 111).  Gridley McKim-Smith (1943–2013) argued that the “profound materiality and sensuality of costume is crucial in Spain’s American possessions, where only stuffs recognized as prestigious can insulate the wearer from public disgrace and where the most sumptuous silks or alpacas, sometimes interwoven with precious metals, can make the wearer both admired and desired.” (114)  In honor of the late McKim-Smith’s research interests and scholarship this session will consider representations of dress and fashion in Iberia and Latin America.  In the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds, depictions of costumes in paintings, sculptures, prints, and other visual media, as well as the creation of textiles and garments, demonstrate the power of dress in the construction of social, racial, gender, and cultural identities.  The existence of extensive global trade networks facilitated the exchange and synthesis of artistic practices and craftsmanship permitting unique garments and objects which revealed the wearer’s style, aesthetic preferences, and social status.  We seek papers from broad geographical and chronological periods, from Pre-Columbian to Modern, that consider the role of fashion, costume, and consumer culture in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds.  How do clothes mediate identity, ideology, social rank, and subjectivity?  What is the relationship between consumer culture and conspicuous consumption in Iberia and Latin America?  How did dimensions of lived experience—psychological, performative, and political—survive in articles of dress?

American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies at College Art Association 2018: Call for session proposals

If you have thought about chairing a panel at the annual meeting of the College Art Association, Los Angeles, 21-24 February 2018, please consider submitting a proposal for ASHAHS sponsorship. As an affiliated society, ASHAHS is able to sponsor one ninety-minute session at this conference.

We seek session proposals that represent the vibrant diversity found within Iberian and Ibero-American art history and welcome those panel topics that will stimulate both broad interest and robust discussion.

Guidelines for proposals from affiliated societies may be found here, including CAA’s requirements concerning membership.

If you would like a panel to be considered for ASHAHS sponsorship, please submit your proposal to Carmen Ripollés or Kelly Watt.  Deadline: 7 April 2017.

Proposals will be evaluated on their scholarly strengths and, all other factors being equal, priority will be given to current ASHAHS members who have paid dues this calendar year. Our goal is to promptly notify the chair(s) of the proposal selected for ASHAHS sponsorship well in advance of CAA’s deadline for session and individual proposals.

Pending the official call papers, 2017, from CAA, ASHAHS will then support the proposal that best advances our programming and complements the outstanding sessions of recent years.

This call invites proposals related to all periods in Iberian and Ibero-American art history and particularly welcomes those topics fostering cross-cultural and interdisciplinary connections. Prospective session Chairs may wish to consult last year’s CAA guidelines before submitting a session proposal abstract and CV to me no later than Monday, September 7, 2015. Please keep in mind the CAA restriction on submissions from individuals who have chaired sessions in the previous two years.

As always, while we evaluate proposals from prospective chairs on their scholarly strengths, all other factors being equal, priority will be given to current ASHAHS members who have paid dues for this calendar year.

Short call: This session investigates how the spectres of surrealism and Magical Realism haunt the production, circulation, and interpretation of contemporary art and visual culture from Latin America. Almost twenty years ago, Gerardo Mosquera’s “Beyond the Fantastic: Contemporary Art Criticism from Latin America” rejected the prevalent understanding of art and culture from Latin America as exotic, magical realist, fantastic and surreal. The edited volume critiqued these tropes as reductive and reflective of Western expectations of how art from Latin America should look like, which role should play in its immediate context, and the terms for its transnational circulation. However, after almost two decades of relative absence, in the last five years there has been a return of these two highly contested methodological frameworks. We invite papers that re-consider the continuities and ruptures between surrealism and Magical Realism in Latin America, while exploring how, and if, they inform contemporary artistic practices from the region.
