Exhibition of 129 Spanish drawings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries selected from the Uffizi’s holdings in Florence by Professor Benito Navarrete. The exhibition is the result of two years of research among drawings some 77 of which were previously considered to be Italian or north European and are now published for the first time as of Spanish authorship.The most important of these discoveries is a drawing, formerly considered German, and now attributed to Juan de Juanes for his lost painting Dead Christ supported by Angels. Other new works include drawings by Alonso de Berruguete, Vicente Carducho, Francisco Pacheco and Herrera the Younger all discovered among the ‘Italian’ works.

The origin of the Uffizi’s Spanish drawings was a collection put together in Madrid around 1745 by a Florentine merchant Giovanni Filippo Michelozzi; the rest were donated in 1866 by the sculptor Emilio Santarelli (1801-1886). Artists represented range from Gaspar Becerra to Meléndez and include works by Luis de Vargas Alonso Cano and Ribera.

Exhibition: Dibujos españoles en la Hamburger Kunsthalle, Prado, Madrid

Previously on display as The Grand Gesture: Drawings from Murillo to Goya from the Hamburger Kunsthalle, at the Meadows Museum, Dallas, this exhibition has moved to the  Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
A significant percentage of the collection, acquired for the Kunsthalle’s Kupferstichkabinett  (Department of Prints, Drawings and Photography) by its first Director, Alfred Lichtwark (1852-1914), is on view.
The exhibition is accompanied by a complete catalogue of all the drawings in the collection, written by Jens Hoffman-Samland with the collaboration of María Cruz de Carlos Varona, Gabriele Fialdi, José Manuel Matilla, Manuela Mena and Gloria Solache, curators at the Museo del Prado.
The exhibition has been co-organized by the Meadows Museum, SMU; the Museo Nacional del Prado; the Hamburger Kunsthalle; the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica; and the Center for Spain in America.

Murillo to Goya, Dallas and Madrid

The Kunsthalle of Hamburg holds one of the most significant collections of Spanish drawings found outside of Spain, containing works by Alonso Cano, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Juan de Valdés Leal and Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, among others. This is the first exhibition to present the collection on a large scale, 123 years after they were purchased. As part of the continued collaboration between the Meadows Museum and the Prado, the jointly organized exhibition will present around 80 drawings, first in Dallas, then at the Prado, Madrid.
