Maius Workshop Welcome Meeting: Gordon House, London, 10 October 2019, 6:00pm

The Maius Workshop returns for the 2019–20 academic year!

Please join us for an informal welcome meeting, which will take place on Thursday 10 October, 2019, at 6:00pm in Room 209 in Gordon House, 29 Gordon Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 0PP (at UCL, but just outside the main campus: click here for directions)

This event is open to anyone interested in pre-modern Hispanic cultures, widely considered: literature and language, history, geography, art and visual culture, medical humanities, music, etc., from Iberia, the Americas, and other Spanish and Portuguese colonies and communities. PhD candidates and ECRs from London universities and beyond are especially invited.

The Maius Workshop’s organisers, Costanza Beltrami, Bert Carlstrom and Elizabeth Chant, will introduce the group and events planned for the coming academic year. It will be an opportunity to meet people with similar research interests working at other universities and departments.

Specialist Workshop “Golden Age Art and Globalization in Madrid’s Museums”

Many of the objects that are admired today in Spain’s major museums arrived here in the Early Modern period. Collections of art,  
artifacts, and objects—everythig from paintings and sculptures to armor, textiles, feathers, books, exotic shells and even animal horns transmitted a variety of meanings, many of which are lost to the average museum visitor today.

Understanding these objects (their origins, how they arrived and how they were seen) introduces students to a deeper appreciation of how Spanish history and identity has been and is created in relationship with the rest of the world, and especially with Spanish-speaking  America and Asia.  The course will explore these issues using ten selected objects that will provide a view of early globalization focusing on questions raised by the objects themselves.  One of the topics to analyze will be the relationship of art to diplomacy, seeking to shed light on the value of paintings of distant places, peoples and animals as “proof” or “document” in the age before photography, or the place of “the others” (non-Europeans) in the history of Spanish and European societies in general, both in the past and in today’s globalized and multicultural world.  Attention will also be paid to questions such as commerce, consumption, religion, and  gender in a world of travelling objects and persons, always with an emphasis on elucidating how these travels created new meanings for objects in new contexts.

This course has a practical, object-based character, with practically all of the sessions taking place in museums, libraries and other collections in Madrid and its surroundings.  Presentations and discussions will take place in fromt of the objects themselves.  This experience will help students to work with objects and to be aware of the material aspects of globalization, further from what is expressed in academic texts and articles. It is expected too that all will feel  something of the fascination and intrigue experienced by contemporaries who saw these things for the first time.

Call for Applications: Sculptural Workshops, Botín Foundation, Santander, 17–28 September 2018—deadline 10 August

901c9487cb6fed6497d73096ee245fbd-cristina-iglesias-land-artSince 1994, the Sculptural Workshops of the Botín Foundation have brought together in Santander young artists from all over the world, to work alongside major figures from the art world. For its next edition, which will take place between September 17 and 28, 2018, the sculptor Cristina Iglesias (San Sebastián, 1958) proposes a research workshop based on her work process, from intimate reflection in the studio through to the implementation of the project in the public sphere. Cristina Iglesias (winner of Spain’s National Sculpture Prize in 1999) is one of the most internationally recognized Spanish artists. Famous for her sculptural works, with suspended pavilions, lattices, corridors and labyrinths, the artist combines industrial materials and elements of nature in her works to create unusual places and spaces of experience. For two weeks, 15 artists will live with Iglesias exchanging experiences and shared work while developing their own personal project, which can also be shared with the public in an open day. The participants in the workshop will propose a project on a topic involving drawings, texts, plans, models or video, and in a place chosen by them that they will develop during their stay. Participants will also visit the city of Santander and its surroundings to discover places or contexts that will help them to develop their project. In addition the artists will visit the foundry in Éibar where Iglesias works, and her installation on the island of Santa Clara de San Sebastián.

The installation of the exhibition CRISTINA IGLESIAS: ENTRƎSPACIOS / INTERSPACES at the Botín Center 6 October 2018 – 24 February 2019 will allow them to discover in a practical way how the artist’s work occupies the space. As a final point of the workshop, the artists will present and defend their project before a panel of professionals who will study and evaluate the projects. The deadline for submitting applications to the workshop is August 10, 2018.

Workshop: Nuevos caminos del hispanismo, 16–17 October 2018, Casa de Velázquez, Madrid

The deadline for enrolment is 12 July 2018 at 5pm. Applicants are required to fill an application form, which will be evaluated on the basis of academic record and language fluency. The 20 selected candidates will be notified after 20 July 2018. The workshop costs 50 euros inclusive of accommodation and lunch. African and Latin American applicants may be selected for a scholarship of 300 euros, intended as a contribution towards travel costs.

 

Workshop: New Work on Books and Readers in the Spanish Speaking World, The Warburg Institute, London, 20 April 2018

 

On 20 April 2018, the Warburg Institute (in conjunction with the Cervantes Institute) will host an event on books and readers in the Spanish-speaking world, with the theme ‘The Book as World, the World as Book’. The day will culminate in a conversation between Alberto Manguel, Director of the National Library of Argentina, and Bill Sherman, Director of the Warburg.

Introducing the Maius Workshop

Morgan Beatus Angel Sun Rev 19The Maius Workshop is an interdisciplinary group that brings together graduate students and early career scholars dealing with Hispanic art (broadly considered to include literature, theatre, music, etc.) and history from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period. The aim of the Maius Workshop is to encourage dialogue among specialists in different stages of their academic life and to provide a forum for discussing methods of information gathering and research news. The group is kindly supported by ARTES.

The workshop is named after the tenth-century painter of the Morgan Beatus manuscript as it wishes to create an interdisciplinary space where scholars of art and history can interact. Through a series of reading group meetings, the Workshop aims to bring together young researchers tackling the study of Hispanic culture and history and to create a strong network of specialists of Medieval and Early Modern Iberia and Latin America.

Thanks to the new connections that the group will create, the meetings will develop current research rather than present finished projects. The group’s activities are directed to the diffusion of the interest in Iberian and Latin American cultural creations, with the long-term aim of establishing a permanent community open to all students of Hispanic art and history.

The Maius Workshop’s first meeting will take place on Monday 16 October at 6 pm at the Warburg Institute. This will be an informal meeting and an opportunity to meet postgraduate researchers with similar interests, to discuss how these interests can be drawn together in a reading group setting. The meeting is open to MA, PhD and early career researchers. Refreshments will be provided.
